Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling in Huntington Beach, CA
Everything about a Huntington Beach kitchen is decided twice: once by the house, and once by the ocean. Within a mile or two of the water, salt-laden air corrodes hardware, degrades unsealed finishes and pushes humidity into rooms that never fully dry out. Downtown's narrow rebuilt lots, Huntington Harbour's waterfront homes and Seacliff's 1980s and 90s tracts are three different houses, but they share a materials problem the inland cities do not have.
The ocean is part of the brief
Nowhere else we work does the environment change the specification the way it does here. Within a mile or two of the water, salt-laden air gets into everything: it corrodes hinges and drawer slides, pits inexpensive plated hardware, lifts unsealed finishes, and keeps a level of humidity in the house that inland rooms never carry.
So a Huntington Beach kitchen is specified twice. Once for the house — its era, its layout, what the client wants. And once for the air, which decides the hardware grade, whether a finish is fully sealed, how the extraction is sized, and which flooring is sensible in that particular room. A kitchen built to inland specification three miles from the beach looks identical on the day it is finished and does not age the same way at all.
Three very different houses
Downtown and Old Town are narrow 25-foot lots, many rebuilt as three-storey homes with the kitchen on the middle floor. The design constraint is footprint; the practical constraint is getting materials up a stairwell that will not take a full-size slab in one piece. That is a templating decision, made on site, and it is why seam placement gets settled early here.
Huntington Harbour is waterfront: single-storey and split-level homes on the channels, kitchens oriented toward the water, and the most aggressive marine conditions in the city. Marine-grade hardware and sealed finishes are not an upgrade here, they are the specification. Opening the kitchen toward the view is usually the reason for the project in the first place.
Seacliff, Goldenwest and the inland tracts are 1980s and 90s two-storey homes that are already open-plan with sound boxes. Refacing plus quartz is the job — with coastal hardware still specified, because the salt reaches further inland than most people assume.
Bathrooms near the water
Bathrooms combine the ambient humidity with their own, which makes ventilation and waterproofing the parts we are least willing to economise on. Humidity-sensing extraction is standard in our coastal bathroom projects, and the membrane and pan detail matters more here than anywhere else in the county.

What Huntington Beach homeowners ask
Does salt air really affect kitchen cabinetry?
It affects the metal first — hinges, slides, pulls and appliance trim corrode noticeably faster near the water, and cheap plated hardware can pit within a couple of years. It affects finishes second, where anything unsealed absorbs moisture. Choosing hardware rated for coastal conditions costs very little at specification and saves the whole job later.
Is hardwood flooring a mistake near the beach?
Not automatically, but it is the riskiest of the three options and it wants a moisture-tolerant subfloor and a properly acclimatised installation. In Huntington Harbour and downtown we more often recommend tile or luxury vinyl, and we will say so rather than sell you the floor you asked for and let it cup in year two.
Our downtown house is three storeys on a narrow lot. Does that change the job?
Mostly it changes logistics. Cabinetry, slabs and appliances have to be carried up, sometimes through a stairwell that will not take a full-size island top in one piece. We plan seam placement and delivery around that at templating, which is exactly why we template on site rather than off the plan.
What about ventilation and humidity?
Extraction ducted to the outside, sized for the hob, matters more here than inland because the ambient humidity is already high. In bathrooms we specify humidity-sensing fans as standard near the water. Both are unglamorous and both decide how the room ages.
