Long Chatelaine Project

White kitchen with a hanging pot rack, dark island and dark wood floor

A white kitchen anchored by two dark elements: a stained wood plank floor running the full length of the room, and an island in a dark finish with a stone worktop.

Above the island is a hanging pot rack — a decision that dates a kitchen in either direction depending on how it is done. Here the rack sits over a dark island in a room with a stainless range, so it reads as working equipment rather than decoration, and it frees the wall cabinets from storing pans.

The island carries a beverage cooler on one end and bar stools along the other side, which makes it the only surface in the room doing three jobs at once: preparation, storage and seating. The perimeter cabinetry is white and largely undecorated, deliberately, because with a dark floor, a dark island and a stainless range there is already enough happening at eye level.

Seven photographs follow.
