Long Beach Project

One photograph survives from this project: a cream kitchen with a corner window over the counter, granite worktops and stainless appliances.

The corner window is the part worth noting. A kitchen laid out into a corner usually loses that run to a dead angle — the cabinets meet, the counter turns, and nothing much happens there. Bringing a window into the corner instead turns the least useful part of the plan into the best-lit surface in the room, which is where most people end up preparing food regardless of where the designer expected them to.

Cream cabinetry with granite is a combination that has aged better than most of what was being fitted alongside it, largely because neither element is trying to be of its moment. The finishes read as warm rather than dated.
